Asthi Visarjan at Haridwar: The Ritual, Step by Step

Families set off for Haridwar with an urn and very little idea of what the day will hold. It is not complicated, but knowing the sequence in advance spares you from being hurried through it by strangers.

When to go

The ashes are collected the morning after the cremation - asthi sanchayan - and immersed as soon as the family can travel. Many go on the third or fourth day; others wait until the thirteenth so that relatives arriving from far away can be present. Both are accepted. What matters is that it is done with attention rather than fitted in.

Haridwar is roughly five to six hours by road from Delhi NCR. Families usually leave before dawn and are back the same night, which makes for a long day but avoids an overnight stay.

Where the immersion is performed

Har Ki Pauri is the best known ghat, and the busiest. Kankhal, a little downstream, is quieter and is where many Delhi families prefer to perform the ritual, particularly with elderly relatives who cannot manage crowds. Both are equally proper.

At the ghat you will be approached by pandits offering to perform the rites. Some are the hereditary pandas who keep the family registers; others are not. This is the single most common place families feel taken advantage of - hence the next section.

What to carry

• The asthi kalash - the urn, usually wrapped in red cloth.
• Death certificate or hospital certificate - occasionally asked for, rarely, but carry a copy.
• Flowers, gangajal, sesame seeds, rice, and a small quantity of ghee - the samagri for the ritual. We pack this so nothing has to be bought at the ghat at ghat prices.
• Cash in small denominations for dakshina and the boat.
• A change of clothes, since the person performing the rites will enter the water.

The sequence on the day

1. Sankalp - the pandit takes the name and gotra of the departed and of the person performing the rites, and states the intention.
2. Pind daan and tarpan - offerings of rice balls and water made for the departed and for the ancestors.
3. The immersion - the ashes are released into the Ganga, generally from a boat a short way out, or from the ghat steps.
4. Final offerings - flowers and remaining samagri follow the ashes into the river.
5. Register entry, if your family keeps records with a panda - many Delhi and Punjabi families have registers going back generations.

The whole thing takes forty minutes to an hour unless the ghat is crowded.

Questions people ask

After how many days should asthi visarjan be done? Commonly the third, fourth or thirteenth day. Where a family cannot travel that soon, it is done later - the urn is kept respectfully at home in the meantime. Later is better than rushed.

Can someone else do it if we cannot travel? Yes. Where the family genuinely cannot go, the rites can be performed on their behalf with the sankalp taken in their names. We arrange this and send photographs and the register entry.

Is Garhmukteshwar an alternative? Yes, and for many Delhi NCR families it is the practical choice - Garh Ganga is about two hours away, so the immersion can be done and the family home by afternoon.

Do we need a boat? Not strictly, but immersion from midstream is preferred and the boat is inexpensive. Agree the fare before boarding.
