How to Get a Death Certificate in Delhi (MCD)

Start by identifying the authority responsible for the place where the death occurred. A medical certificate supplied by a hospital and a civil death certificate issued after registration serve different purposes. Ask which document is needed for the next step instead of treating them as interchangeable.

Identify the registration authority

For an MCD-area registration, start with the official MCD Birth and Death Registration portal. Delhi also has other local jurisdictions, so confirm the responsible authority with the hospital or local registration office. A family address in Delhi does not by itself establish where an event must be registered.

Report promptly and check the current procedure

The normal reporting period is 21 days, as explained by the National Informatics Centre's civil registration guidance. If that period has passed, ask the registrar for the delayed-registration procedure that applies to your case. Do not assume every late application needs the same affidavit, permission or fee.

Check the document list before applying

MCD's citizen registration instructions list supporting records such as the informant's and deceased person's identity details, an undertaking and the doctor's medical certificate. The portal also distinguishes later registration categories. Confirm the list for your jurisdiction and circumstances before submitting.

• Ask the hospital or reporting institution whether the event has already been reported and request its reference details.
• Check names, dates and addresses against the supporting records.
• Keep the application reference and copies of documents submitted.
• If a detail is wrong, ask the authority about its correction procedure.

Find or download an existing record

Use the official portal rather than an unrelated search advertisement. If the record cannot be found, contact the reporting institution or registration office; repeated applications may not solve a missing or mismatched entry. Check the authority's current charges and processing information rather than relying on a promised turnaround from a third party.

Keep registration and immediate arrangements separate

Confirm the hospital's release documents and the cremation ground's requirements directly. If the deceased needs to travel, check the requirements for the selected route and airline. A document accepted for one purpose may not meet another authority's requirements.
