Documents Required to Transport a Dead Body in India

The paperwork depends on the route, the circumstances of the death and the carrier. Begin with the hospital or authority releasing the deceased, then confirm the requirements at the destination. There is no single checklist covering every road journey, airline and country.

Road transport: confirm release and destination requirements

Before arranging pickup, ask the hospital, mortuary or relevant authority which release and identity documents are needed. For a case involving the police, follow the investigating authority's instructions. Share the destination and any interstate travel with the transport provider so the applicable requirements can be checked.

Domestic air transport: an airline-specific example

IndiGo's published policy lists a death certificate from a competent medical authority, an embalming certificate, local police permission and identification of the deceased for movement from an Indian station. This is an example for that carrier, not a universal list. Confirm the operating airline's current requirements, route acceptance, cargo booking and packing specifications before arranging embalming or a coffin. See air transportation assistance for booking stages.

Human remains arriving in India from abroad

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare's eCARe portal handles public-health clearance for inbound human remains. Its FAQ identifies the death and embalming certificates, the relevant Indian embassy NOC and the cancelled passport among mandatory application documents. Additional records may be requested. Consult the official eCARe FAQ and document instructions for current requirements.

Do not apply an inbound Indian checklist automatically to a journey leaving India. Outbound arrangements must meet the destination country's, transit country's and airline's requirements. Contact the relevant consulate and carrier for the selected route.

Make a case-specific checklist

1. Record the departure location, destination, route and receiving person's details.
2. Ask which authority issues each document and which records the family must supply.
3. Check names and identification details across the records, including required translations.
4. Confirm packing, cargo acceptance, flight details and collection before fixing family travel plans.
