What to Do in the First 24 Hours After a Death at Home

Once a death has been confirmed, the family needs a clear contact, a plan for the deceased and a record of the arrangements. The sequence below helps organise those decisions without assuming that every case follows the same procedure.

1. Get the appropriate medical or emergency help

For a confirmed death, ask the hospital or attending medical professional about the next steps and records. Where the police are involved, follow the responsible authority's release instructions. Do not assume that any doctor can certify every cause of death or that a post-mortem is automatic in every case.

2. Choose a family coordinator

Ask one person to keep the contacts, documents and quotes together, with a backup if needed. Share news and travel details privately with relatives. Confirm the family's ritual preferences and who wishes to attend before fixing the schedule.

3. Discuss the arrangements while you wait

If relatives or paperwork will take time, ask the hospital or service team about appropriate arrangements for the deceased. A freezer rental and a mortuary arrangement are different options; confirm suitability, availability and charges for the actual situation.

4. Confirm the destination and transport

If the deceased will travel to another city or country, check route-specific documents before confirming travel.

5. Agree what the quote includes

6. Keep track of documents and later tasks

Retain the release records, booking references and receipts. Start checking the civil registration process promptly rather than assuming all paperwork can wait.
